Muhammad Ali is by far the greatest athlete of all time.

No other boxer in history has displayed the combination of speed, strength and stamina as Ali. He twice defeated Sonny Liston who at the time was feared just as much as Mike Tyson in his prime. He remains the only boxer to defeat George Foreman by knockout.

No other athlete was and is more globally recognized and Michael Jordan is perhaps the only other athlete that comes as close to Ali as being the undeniable symbol of his sport.

55 PGA tournaments, 11 majors under his bet at the age of 31. In most sports that is considered old, in golf it is prime. 7 wins in a row, in a time of the best players golf has ever seen, and still dominating in a fashion no athlete ever has. Workout ethic like a horse, and a dedication few have attained, sets Tiger Woods apart.

A) Best Pitcher of his time
B) Best Hitter of any time
C) Drank, smoked and ate, like it was all going out of style. In sum he was the best athlete without even trying. I dont think he ever heard of a gym let alone set foot in one. Lets see Ali, Woods, or Jordan accomplish anything with the Ruth diet.
D) The guy cursed a city.

Hands down Michael Jordan. When an athlete can change the face of a whole sport, then you know he is a great athlete. From the way people wear their shorts, from the amount of money they are willing to pay for shoes, to the way the game is played period. I don't think any other athlete can say, "look at how I changed the game," and have things to actually back up that statement. I mean people are still comparing other athletes to him and he's retired!!

The most notable area of Pelé's life since football is his ambassadorial work for various bodies. In 1992, Pelé was appointed a United Nations ambassador for ecology and the environment.
Pelé is in third place on the list of all-time top goalscorers in international matches; in 92 appearances for the Brazilian team, he scored 77 goals. He is in fourth place behind Ronaldo, Gerd Müller, and Just Fontaine on the list of goalscorers in World Cup matches, with 12 goals. He was part of three World Cup winning teams, although he did not play in the 1962 final due to injury and did not receive a medal. Pelé is one of only four footballers to have achieved the feat of scoring in two different World Cup final matches, sharing that honor with Paul Breitner, Vava, and Zinedine Zidane.[34] He is one of five players to have scored twice from direct free kick in World Cups (The others are Rivelino, Teófilo Cubillas, Bernard Genghini, and David Beckham). He is one of only two players to have scored in four World Cups (the other being Uwe Seeler, who did it in the same four tournaments as Pelé).

The greatest athelete of all time. Winner of the Gold Medal in the Pentathlon and Decathlon in the 1912 Olympics. All American Football player. Baseball. Basketball. You name it. All he had to do was watch someone demonstrate a skill and he could immediately challenge them as a newcomer. He merits the title of world's greatest because of his demonstrated ability to do it all.

MJ? Anyone remember what happened when he tried playing baseball? If we're talking about the person that most dominated a single sport, then we can talk about MJ. But he could only play one sport, just like all the other athletes proposed.

Deion was a top-notch talent in baseball and football at the same time. In football, he was a shut-down cornerback...one of the best in NFL history.

he's hit a home run and scored a touchdown in the NFL in the same week...the only man to have played in a MLB and NFL game during the same day...the only man to play in both a Super Bowl and World Series.

he could run the 40 yard dash in 4.29 and 4.6 backwards....BACKWARDS!!! Now that's just ridiculous.

"Athlete" means a physically active individual training for or participating in an amateur, educational or professional athletic organization or any other association that sponsors athletic programs or events in the State.

An athlete is a person possessing above average physical skills (strength, agility, and endurance) and thus seen suitable for physical activities, in particular, contests. An ancient Greek word for "contest" was athlos, and those competing in the games were called athletes.

I have never seen a man so in control of his every move.

Roger Bannister was the first human to break the sub-four-minute mile. Since then this achievement has been accomplished several times and has been broken by as much as 17 seconds. But Roger Bannister accomplished this feat in 1954! This is almost half a century before the revolution of dietary supplements and performance-enhancing drugs, not to mention new, more efficient, scientific training methods that make athletes the super-humans that they are today.

Roger Bannister's sub-four-minute mile was declared the the greatest athletic achievement OF ALL TIME in 2005 by Forbe's magazine.

Most people don't even know who he was, which is just sad, because he RULED tennis unlike anyone. He did it without "proper" training, constant coaching, or country club memberships. He did it by pure talent, and athletic ability. He was number one in tennis for almost two decades. And we think Federer is amazing for winning for a few years.

First American to win the Decathlon in the 70's. That's TEN track and field sports. If you want to gauge athleticism, how many of your so-called athletes can even compete in more than one sport?

I'll bet he could even beat all the other athletes on the list if he had to compete with them in the Decathlon tomorrow.

He was a man who raised the bar in the combined sporting event of the Decathlon, where he was a force to be reckoned with in all 10 of the sports competed in and has broken the world record for points scored 4 times during his career.

Since this argument is essentially who the best athlete is, it should be obvious that a man who is considered by many to be the greatest decathlete who ever lived to be the greatest athlete who ever lived.
