There's a reason why alarmists come out when a company starts to become powerful. Google has tremendous power. Wether they will use it for everyones benefit or to do what they want has yet to be seen. Anyone with so much control over the flow of information has the power to change the information. Google may not do it, but they could.

There is no denying that Google does have tremendous power. What with adwords, gmail and froogle - Google could heavily influence markets and wield political power; and that's not even mentioning the search engline itself.

The main question here is not "does Google have the power?", it's "would Google use the power?". That's why I come down on this side, because although it may sound like scare-mongering, there have been no substantive points on the opposite side of this debate.

Would Google use the power? Yes. Capitalism is not based on moral responsibility, and neither is the concept of a free market, which is why we have Governments to protect the interests of the people. Firms are out for profit, and there is nothing to demonstrate to us that Google is not the same. It is easily the most powerful corporation in the internet business and as the internet is swiftly becoming, if it is not already, the most powerful tool in our society. That sort of power corrupts, and corrupts deeply - google began for one reason, profit, why should now be any different?

We do have an example of its lack of morals, where it puts profit before moral responsibility. Google allows the Chinese Government to censor its seaches, so people in China cannot access articles and websites which may be damaging to their regime. This is a horrendus breach of free speech, and free speech is the very basis of western society, read the first ammendment. This example is clear -

Google would put money-making before morals. The more powerful it becomes, the greater the temptation. We've seen the first example of corruption, will it be the last? I think not.

Isn't that exactly what makes google so powerful?

It's difficult to use the internet and not use some service provided by google - and they know that full well.

google searches actually used to work. you used to be able to search, say for example, "job AND Boston AND resume" and get results that had all three first, then others; try it now, and you'll get a bunch of crap. since i wrote them a few years ago about this, and since it used to be that way but isn't anymore, i'm pretty sure it's completely on purpose. why? paid ads! that's right, they didn't used to have them, when the search used to work right. coincidental?

look at the terms of use, and the new laws. govt/ law enforcement can look at anything you leave on any google. they can check where you've left markers on the maps, all your email that's stored there, all your chats, etc. has it been done? you've got to be kidding yourself if you ask that question.

No. They would never use any confidential information from users for their own purpose.

The Google-paranoia people display kind of mimics the Microsoft-paranoia. Once a company becomes too powerful, the alarmists come out from under their rocks....

The only thing worrying about Google is the fact that they created Google Earth, which shows the tactical layouts of all of our military forces world-wide - but information wise they have rules to follow that are not invented by them....

so no worries there........
