Some people only mature when they are forced to look after themselves.

Whenever the parents feel like it, it's their property "after legal age of course".

Son: Hey mom n' dad! I just graduated high school! What's next?

Dad: Well Son, you're 18 now so its time for you to get the eff out of my house.

Son: But wh-

Mom: But nothing! You're old enough now. I know you only have $1500 to your name and you have no useful education and skills and you want to go to college, but some people only mature when they are forced to look after themselves.

Dad: True dat Wifey! Its time for you to be a man and take care of yourself. I know it will be nearly impossible for you to work enough to afford rent and living expenses and go to school but hell, i just dont really feel like having you in my house anymore. Tootles.

...Give me a break

I guess it depends on what a parent wants for their child. If a parent wants their child to work minimum wage their whole life, by all means they should kick them out at 18. But if they want to invest in their child and have them go to college and/or law school, then that would be better.

Seriously,. My wife and I told our boys that they could live in our house as long as it takes for them to further their education AND as long as they are acting responsibly with their lives AND as long as they are contributing to the family in positive ways.

There are still men and women past the age of 40 who reside at their parents homes and there are also 16 year old teens who move out into their own studio apartment or into something roomier with friends. Whenever you feel the need to spread your wings, so to speak, and leave the nest then that is when you are ready.
It should not be labeled as, "By 18 you will be mature enough to seperate your whites from your darks and change your sheets once a week and make a food order that will not exceed this month's salary, etc..." Personally, I am younger than my brother but I am also far more mature and adult-like. I can make my own dinners and find my way around town, whereas I prepare his food becuase he is incompetent, for example. Just becuase you've reached the age where you are officilay and adult and can decide for yourself does not mean that is the age when you must leave and go onto newer, and not always better, things.

I moved out when I was 15. But, given maturity rate of the average American I would guess 30 is probably more realistic.
