You are talking about an evolution as if it is an event that just happens which is not congruent with the way that evolution works, which is a series of small changes over time. However, I do agree with your sentiment. I know what you are saying. It no longer matters if a person is born fat or slow or even mentally handicapped or deformed. We keep these people alive and protect them as part of our "civilized" society. It is also clear that almost anybody and almost everybody reproduces so things like deformities and genetic diseases for the most part don't hinder a person's chances of passing their genes on. So, the current period of evolution we are already experiencing is more along the lines of an evolution of ideas and technology. The best ideas and most efficient technologies will now survive over their lesser capable peers. This has been expressed in the idea of "Memetics" among other things.

By nonphysical I assume you mean spiritual, in which case you are absolutely correct. The next evolution has been developing for over 3000 years now, many people have already 'evolved' however the majority are still to evolve, and this atypically the case with evolution albeit physical or nonphysical. This evolution is of mind, many call the non physical evolution 'enlightenment', however one thing can be sure all mainstream religions are aimed at helping the human race reach this nonphysical end point of evolution otherwise known as enlightenment. It shows a progression in the human race, we have advanced physically, now we will advance mentally.

This would be the most likely scenario to be publicized as evolution since it would be something that is almost impossible to observe or quantify and thus be deemed proof....like everything else about evolution.

Define "nonphysical".

Otherwise, lucasgreen is absolutely correct.

What is meant by "next" human evolution? Evolution is ongoing and constant. Humans (just like every other living thing) are constantly evolving via natural selection. While it is true that modern medicine keeps people alive that, in a world without modern medicine, would have died, evolution is still occurring because people still die and people still procreate. I don't think it is possible to say that the "next human evolution" will be nonphysical when evolution is a continuous -physical- process.

I'm no expert but I have been told that our little fingers are getting smaller and our brains are getting larger.

What about evolution is non-physical? This might be a question that should be directed at the creator of this debate.

Atlas101, your statement is laughable. In fact I did laugh but afterwards I just felt sad (and more than a little annoyed) that people can be so ignorant. Evolution is not almost impossible to observe. It is extremely possible to observe. You can even see it with your own eyes, in your own lifetime. Probably not human evolution, given our lifespan, but that is not what you seem to be suggesting. Forgive me for paraphrasing but what you seem to be saying is this: everything about evolution is almost impossible to observe or quantify. You could not be more wrong.

Domestication of some animals is an example of evolution, one you can see for yourself. Do some research. here is a starting point for you: Lenski's long-term evolution experiment with Escherichia coli. It is an experiment that was started in 1988 and is still going today. Here is a link, on the off chance that you can tear yourself away from misconceptions. http://myxo.css.msu.edu/ecoli/

Livelife, you state that "the next human evolution has been developing for over 3000 years now". Could you please site your source? I would be very interested to know what scientist (or reputable person of any background really) put their name to this, and came up with this seemingly arbitrary number.

"we have advanced physically, now we will advance mentally." This suggests that the way we think will change. Our consciousness, our ability to think (what you might call the soul), stems from our brain. Memories, personality, anything you may attribute to the 'soul' in fact is the brain. Now I have gone down this tangent for a reason - for our thinking to change, for us to advance "mentally" we would in fact be advancing our brain. Hence a physical, not non-physical, evolution.
