LOVE is just a name given to natural "animal attraction" because humans like to give a meaning to everything in their lives. Love is just a mental concept without a good definition. Just like infinity

Based on the divorce rate of this country I am impressed with you being married that long, even my parents didn't last that long they seperated and divorced after about 27 years and this is also impressive because amung your people the rate is higher

I agree with certain parts of that little rant, but not the whole thing.

"LOVE is just a name given to natural 'animal attraction'..."
I suppose this is true, although I wouldn't put it that way. Love is an emotion occurring in the human brain. If you want to call that "animal" I suppose it wouldn't be inaccurate, because we are animals after all, so in a sense the brain is a part of our animal bodies.

"...because humans like to give a meaning to everything in their lives."
Well that just makes us all sound pitiful. People don't just pretend there is meaning where there is none to stave off depression, they do so because it is wired into their brains. The world isn't so depressing when there is no meaning that we need to pretend, we only do so because there is a Darwinian survival advantage in this state of mind.

"Love is just a mental concept without a good definition."
I've never liked the idea of a word with no definition. If you use the word "love" and then later and then later say you can't say what love is, then you have really failed to use language correctly. Besides, why shouldn't a mental concept have a good definition?

"Just like infinity."
See dkturner's reponse.

I'm still posting in "yes" because I agree with your general sentiments. I am opposed to the mystification of love, and anyone who tries to say love is more than a natural emotion has done nothing but make it harder to use the word love with confidence that you know what you are talking about.

Infinity is not a mental concept, it is a term for the eternal, for a number withut end. We are finite creatures living in a finite universe and are incapable of perceiving infinity-it doesn't compute but it is not a mental concept

As far as love is concerned you are confusing lust and sexual attraction with love-take it from someone who has been in love with someone who is also in love for over 35 years

Actually, infinity has an extremely good definition. There are actually two varieties we know of: countably and uncountably infinite. The set of integers is infinite, since for every integer n, n+1 is also an integer, hence there is no "largest integer", hence the set is infinite in size. That is actually how infinity is defined: equivalent to the size of the set of integers. On the other hand, for every pair of reals, there is another real in-between the pair, so the set of reals is uncountably infinite (the cardinality of the set is strictly greater than the cardinality of the set of integers). And after that, things get complicated.

I'm also pretty sure that cognitive psychologists and evolutionary biologists are zeroing in on a firm definition of love, although I can't claim to be an expert in either field.

EXCUSE ME! Did I read that statement right? "Among your people?" Is Jon somehow different? Sorry for interrupting, but SOMEONE should be asking this question of you. Might as well be me, since I speak rarely anymore. I think an explanation and an apology are in order. I for one am offended. I am sure there are others on this site that are offended as well.
