Everybody is entitled to own a car* just as everybody is entitled to own a television or a tennis racket; a car is not a necessity, it is a lifestyle choice and there is no widespread reason why somebody should not be entitled to own a car.

*As long as they are legally entitled to! i.e. with a valid driving license.

If a person has been trained and granted a license, the s/he is obviously entitled to own a car. This is specifically a legal decision. According to the Charter of Rights (and Bill), everybody is free to own whatever so long as it isn't unlawful. A car is definitely not unlawful.

Now, as the system goes, one's License (would italicize 'license') can be confiscated after enough incidents, not to mention insurance skyrocketing. Still, one is perfectly entitled to own a car, even if s/he has been banned from driving it.

An interesting stance, but one I find a little problematic.

The rights of ownership of property are entirely separate from the rights to citizenship and rights from harm. If you start mixing and matching, they're not really "rights" at all, and conditions. Now, there are places in the world where there are no rights to property, and the state could seize your goods if you were an illegal immigrant, alcoholic or dangerous person. But I'm not sure I would want to live in such a state.

Sorry, i wasnt specific enough with this debate title i guess. By "entitled to own a car" i was leaning more towards "Is everyone entitled to own a car, even if that means the government should pay for it and give it to you"

Because public education isn't what it should be (atleast in my country) and public healthcare would probably be a disaster (atleast in my country)

Char1929 hits the bull's eye, that is precisley how I feel, everyone is entitled in the defintion you say. Being entitled to something, whatever it may be doesn't imply you must have it or be given it. Entitled is basically the right to have

No thats merely the question i was proposing for this debate. I happen to think that most people are not entitled to almost anything, certainly not a car.

some people are horrible drivers and endanger everybody else on the road and if you are that bad then you do not deserve a car

Not EVERYBODY should be entitled to free car.

Especially illegal immigrants, alcoholics, and people who have proven to the law that they cannot drive safely.

BlackKodiak, I never argued for a state which seizes property or does not allow ownership to property. I am arguing that everybody should not have guaranteed right to a car in the same way they have a guaranteed right to a lawyer if unable to afford one.

I guess there are two ways to interpret this. It depends what the creator means by the "word" entitled.

Wow, Frankie I am surprised you said this because I never thought of you as a socialist, what you are saying is that everyone must own a car

How expensive would that be? Such a waste of money, a good bike and money for planes will take you wherever you need to go.
