When considering the great germans, we must remember that only a certain amount were nazis. The infamous SS, and thus any leaders of it, are to be despised. Hitler's lackeys are Nazis and some of his generals, for example, Goring, were anti-semitic. However, many were proud officers fighting simply because they had been fighting for years for Germany. They were fighting for their country. They weren't Nazis. they were honest soldiers. True, being some of the highest ranked men in Germany, they weren't often misconceived. However, they threw a hero's effort together. They defeated forces more than twice their size in Russia, until Hitler interveend and overextended their lines. They crushed France and held the Allies at bay for 5 years. These chaps, those whom weren't fascists Nazis, could be given great credit for their achievements.

Guderian was one of the most innovative men of the war for his early concept up Blitzkrieg and lightning armoured fighting (tanks). He is the one who revolutionized the Panzers and tigers to fight as independant columns - deadly columns, rather than only as infantry support.

Rommel revolutionized German techniques in Africa, Europe and the Middle East.

The one I would choose as the greatest geenral of the Germans would be Rommel. Rommel was a revolutionary fighter. He drove the English 8th Army 9and other forces) back and completely slaughtered the Americans and 1st Army at Operation Torch. It wasn't until an equal in command arrived with ingenuity and method that Rommel was bested in Africa.

Rommel was a great commander. he became Field marshall and championed fighting in the west.

However, I think that he is most commendable for his honour in war. Rommel was not a Nazi. He despised Hitler's lackeys and all that Nazism stood for. He fought for his soldier's honour and Germany, but he did not trick himself into believing that Nazis were the good of Germany. In fact, for the good of Germany, Rommel joined an assassination attempt. It failed and one by one the headmen were picked out, several naming Rommel as a fellow conspirator.

Rommel was such a heroic figure tot he public, however, that he could not be arrested and shot (or tortured) like a dog. Instead, he was given two options. the first was to stand trial at the people's court and be killed, bringing humiliation upon himself, or to die a hero with suicide, leaving his family with a tremendous pension and honour. As such, having failed to save Germany, he saved his family from humiliation, his nation from internal strife and himself from a prolongues agonizing death.
