I was thinking that if we diddnt have sleep we would go insane.
why?
when you sleep and then wake up you are refreshed, reenergized. In other words it gives you the chance to start all over again.
if you diddnt sleep then wouldn't your mind just drive you insane without a new start (sleep).

i still think we would go insane because we would constantly be hearing our minds think, making more room for things to happen whether they be good or bad.
sure we are constantly thinking anyways but i think that is a part of why we sleep to give our minds a break.

We actually have to sleep to survive. People who don't get enough REM sleep can suffer from many symptoms, including irritability, hallucinations, paranoia, and eventually insanity.

Without sleep we would all lose our minds.

Now, if we didn't NEED to sleep we wouldn't go insane, obviously. That's pretty much a no-brainer, in fact this debate deals more with scientific fact than anything else. Pretty much DOA.

Sorry, Jonjax...I have to say something about this one. I've been under the impression for many years now, that human beings do not as many as 6-8 hours of sleep, and have been depriving myself to the point of insomnia.

I often go day after day, with as little as four hours of sleep, and it has taken its toll. I feel, without question, it has affected my memory. My ability to articulate and the breadth of my lexicon has diminished...all because of the fact that my brain has been deprived of the restful sleep it needs to organize and file information, from my day's mental activities.

Insufficient sleep ages your body...makes you less able to cope...therefore more irritable, and less productive. It negatively impacts your immune system, and has played a role in the development of numerous diseases. There are rare times when I sleep deeply...and for many hours...but, I know that it can not make up for lost "sleep" time.

Sleeeep is a good thing, and I say, if you can...get your eight hours! :)

Well we know why we sleep. Simply put, the body needs the physical and mental rest. I may be mistaken, but most, if not all organisms partake in some form of rest. Its not always closing their eyes, sucking pillow, and having sweet dreams of rolling ice cream sundae hills and sugar cane trees and a naked Elisha Cuthbert laying next to you...but some form of rest occurs with most living things.

We would be tired and irritable is we needed to sleep and chose not to. But, if we didn't need sleep, there would be no negative effects in not doing so.

Sleep is over rated, especially how much sleep is needed. I have been averaging 5-6 hours of sleep for over 40 years and my mind is sharp and I am in great physical shapre and look 10 years younger than my age. it is more about quality of sleep, I fall sound asleep in less than 10 minutes and sleep profoundly arsing feeling fantastic each and every morning. one of the greatest inventive minds in history Thomas Alva Edison onlly slept 2-3 or 4-5 hours every night of his entire adult life and lived to be a grand old man, lucid and sharp to the end

Why do we sleep? I'll answer that for you: nobody knows. It's hard to say anything about what we dont know.

Just for your information one of the most probable reasons we sleep is to break down some o dose synaptic connections that we form throughout the day, all those minute details that we dont really need to remember. Think of how much you cant even remember from yesterday. We build these connections all day and by the end of it our brains are using substantially more energy then in the morning. The brain needs to get rid of some stuff to keep the brain running, kind of like defragmenting your hard drive. Thats one theory at least.

As for going literally insane, well what is insanity really. Just kidding I dont want to go there. But we do have plenty of insomniacs who cant go to sleep. As far as I know insomniacs dont go "insane". They probably arent the happiest of people, but not clinically insane. So not sleeping wont make you go insane, as far as I know. I'd try it out and let you know, but I love to sleep.

This statement is absolutely false. If we "didn't need to sleep," our bodies and minds would have developed differently, resulting in our not needing sleep to feel refreshed and alert. Also, we would have been used to being awake at all times because that would have been all we would have known throughout our lives.

Now, if the topic had been "if we COULDN'T sleep..." then I would have been forced to agree.

But if we didn't NEED sleep then our bodies wouldn't NEED that mental and physical refresher, atleast from a physiology stand point.

I personally would love to not need sleep. Think about all the time we waste sleeping! We miss out on about 1/3rd of our lifetime while we're sucking pillow.

No. I do not think if you do not get sleep you will not be insane. You'll get mad and irritable but not insane.

That would only be true if the definition of madness was the opposite of being "refreshed and re[-]energized" which it obviously isn't unless you are willing to concede that at any one moment 80% of the world is insane.

This is a false statement. Because when you do not sleep, your brain starts to malfunction. When malfunction it swaps parts of the brain with one and another, making you see things that doesn't exist (hallucinate) and if you do not pass out, you'll die.

We actually dont know why we sleep. ''It may be the biggest open question in biology,'' said Dr. Allan Rechtschaffen, a sleep expert and a professor emeritus at the University of Chicago.

As for "physical and mental rest". Sure we pretty much agree that sleep has something to do with the brain, although you wouldn't call it "rest" seeing how active the brain is during sleep. There is no need for physical rest though. Your "body" organs, muscles, ect. can function indefinitely without need for rest. Only your brain needs sleep.

I'll paste a NY Times article about the subject at the bottom, but I also want to pull one more quote from it that may just end this argument altogether: "Researchers once thought that a prolonged lack of sleep produced mental illness. They now know that this is not the case, though waking subjects up every few minutes, early studies showed, made them cranky."

There you go, sleep doesn't make you insane. http://tinyurl.com/lhdtlu

Yup sleep is good. But the question is "will it make you go insane" and the answer is "no it wont".

Also, just for your information since I see your so sleep deprived, you can make up for lost sleep. In a study done, I believe, by the Army, they let people lay in bed and do whatever they wanted for almost a month. For the first two weeks most people slept a lot more then 8 hours, as much as 10 or 15 hours a day. But after two weeks or so they started sleeping a normal 6-9 hours. The researchers hypothesisized that during the first two week period participants were making up for lost sleep before the study.

So get some sleep!
