The CIA has defended America from communism and terrorism

Even if 9/11 was ONLY caused by the ineptitude of the CIA (if) that's still the only major terrorist attack on US soil since Pearl Harbour. That's in no way excusing 9/11 in and of itself (DAMMIT now you have me saying it) but its still only one attack in the past 70 years. Which is saying something considering how noticeably easy it is to obtain devastating weaponry and using it against other people now a days.

and more. The CIA has cracked cases and performed busts that we may never know about. They are definitely doing more good than harm. They've even busted up crime syndicates such as branches of the Mafia. Yes the CIA have been involved in a few scandals, but they and the M8 are preventing more attacks than we appreciate. Just a few weeks ago they busted those guys that wanted to blow up several spots in New York - and that was on Yahoo news.

Canada's parallel organization infiltrated a terrorist training camp outside of Toronto a few years ago. If they had not, these militants would have destroyed the Sears Tower, Washington Monument and several other more strategic points. The CIA is more renowned - imagine what an agent does in a big case?

With all that said, there has not been a major terrorist attack on US soil since September 11, 2001. As counterproductive as their "corrupt" (parenthesis are for my ignorance) doings have been, still no attack has been fully carried out. I consider that to be most effective.

The CIA has harmed American national security more than it has protected it.

I really have to wonder how Rob’s statement can stand any kind of scrutiny. If the CIA has cracked more cases and made more busts that we may never know about then how do you know? The next one is that they and M8 are preventing more attacks than we appreciate.
Further to all of their claims of breaking up terrorist plots, at what point are these people brought to trial.
It would be very easy for me to claim all sorts of wonderful life saving feats if I never have to prove it.
How many of these plots against the western world are a direct result of the CIA directly meddling in the affairs of another country?

The actions of the CIA have placed America in great danger. For every threat the CIA may have neutralized it has created a number of other threats because of the tactics used. Every crime you can imagine has been committed by the CIA, terrorism, murder, drug trafficking, torture etc. Those crimes have caused a major setback for agents that truly did try and protect the country in a sane and practical manner. It has committed these crimes while acting at the behest of the executive branch as well as acting independently, concealing its actions from Congress and the President. Millions of people around the world view the CIA as a terrorist organization.

Hawaii was not US soil in the 40's was it? It wasn't after Pearl Harbour it became a US state? Please correct me if I am wrong, but on that basis that is one terror attack on US soil since the creation of the CIA.

I'd love those odds over here in the UK. We create our OWN terrorists here and still live safely enough lol.

If I was an American I would thank the CIA for their hard and dedicated work, in the same way I thank our SIS.

I wouldn't say Communism was a threat to America.
It was an opposing ideology to it, but it didn't threaten the country at all.

The Soviet Union was a threat, not communism.

Unfortunately if it weren't for the ineptitude of the bureaucracy within the CIA pre-9/11 the attacks on September 11, 2001 may have been prevented. There were agents that were putting there lives at risk and others who were doing their best to force the upper echelons of the agency to see the extent of the threat that Al-Qaeda posed. But of course with the way the government works these efforts were for nothing. They were ignored by those within the CIA as well as Clinton and Bush administrations.

You bring up a good point though and it will give me something to read about in regard to the role played by the CIA, as well as the Bush Adminstration, in preventing further attacks. I read a number of stories on that subject but my memory is sh*t and it would be interesting to revisit the matter.
