Human beings will always accept ideas through group think. Our Zeitgeist may change over time but society will never escape it.

Zeitgeist: the defining spirit or mood of a particular period of history as shown by the ideas and beliefs of the time. And by society, I mean the culture that one finds themselves in, which would include belief systems, social norms, traditions, cliches, etc. I am trying to say that people will always form their opinion's and thoughts from what others think around them, and empirical evidence will always make up a small part of a person perception. I'm also taking liberties with the definition of religion and using it as any traditional belief pattern.

Dear brothers, there is just a spill of difference between science and religion. and it is that, science is where we right now are on the scientific path and religion is too forward on the scientific path. No religion is mere sh*t...Each one is a coding. let it be Quran or Bible or Bhagavadgita, every thing they say is science but in a spiritual way(which is something more than working with numbers and figures, but your soul). To know some of the religious practices which are considered dumb, but carry a deep science, go to ... www.ubb01.wordpress.com

God, the Creator, had created the whole universe based on firm design and creation principles and laws out of which scientists are trying to discover very small parts.
He created people with minds and called them to think and learn always and deeply in the creation of the universe, everything around them and in themselves to discover how omniscient and powerful is their God.
So, science must be guided by the original teachings and instructions of God the Creator ( as they considered similar to manufacturer's catalogues ). Whatever theory that contradicts the original teachings and instructions of the creator must be revised.
The original and authoritative instructions of God the Creator are contained in His last message to humanity : the Quran. ( Please see talkislam.com ).

Science depends on religion in three ways
1. If we take religion as a matter of collective belief, scientists believes in the scientific method or the belief massively unknown yet existing physical theories that are not yet completely proven yet they are predominantly true and existing (working).

2. The ethical use technology (a product of science has) relies on spiritual and moral guidance, especially that science is very powerful that it can create massively destructive guidance. Science cannot this get from itself since it's a very objective field. Religion can help in the moderation of the use of technology, and sometimes it makes matters worse...religious conflicts that make use of deadly weapons (missiles/bombs/etc.).

3. Science works on established facts and principles that are initially set long way ago. First, we believe that quantum mechanics occur because we can study it (even if not perfectly) and derive observations from it that we can replicate to some probable extent. However, our fate on the accuracy of our experiments relies on the fact that we trust our METHODS. One example may be, okay, Quantum Mechanics and Classical Relativity. There are just pieces that don't match and sometimes even if they seem so counter-intuitive when matched to each other, we simply have to accept that they are both true. It's a matter of belief.

Religion as it exists today is a form of control, a way of controlling peoples lives, dreams, fears and other emotions. The very essence of various religions such as Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism was the culmination of the effort of those generations search for truth and meaning. It was very scientific in its essence, logically rather than empirically.
Today Science has taken over the flag for the search for truth. It resorts to do so empirically, by means of experimentation and logically approaching the problem. Science and religion essentially were the same thing in those ancient times, Smart guys sitting together and debating, Finding truths through experience.
A new religion might be in the making now, Something based on philosophy backed by science and supported by many years of ethical experimentation. Based on our greater understanding of the universe we would give rise to a better species Religion is going to depend on Science being the guiding light!

Religion depends on science in three ways, as well.
1. Religion evolved through the ages with the help of science and technology. We now have projectors in masses after microphone sand electronic pianos paved the spiritual harmony within the church. It's great to see religion that are adapting to the evolution of science and technology and such evolution of religion happens... usually very slowly, though.
2. To keep its followers on track, religion must accept many scientific facts like the Earth is round, the Sun is a million miles away, etc. A religion trying to refute an established scientific fact manifests a sign of complete desperation in twisting the facts. Thus, religions depend on science for the facts that normalizes what we know and what we don't know (what we believe in).
3. Oh yeah, the stem cell research as Sam Hariss pointed out, religion must recognize the benefits presented by different promising research work and not hinder it because scientists spend time in laboratories more than seminaries.
