It is clear that Hitler is the better of the two for numerous reasons.

Before I start I would like to spend a line or two discussing what 'best dictator' means. Does that mean the cruelest? The one who did most for their countries? There are many variables to which the term good can apply.

For my own argument I would like to compare three crucial aspects of what I would class as a 'good dictator' and explain why I believe Hitler had the better part of the deal.

First of all, if we are looking purely at the collective cruelty of the two, I would state that Hitler was the better dictator. Although both deported and executed millions of people (and Stalin executed a few million more than Hitler, partially because he had more time to do so) we have to look at the motifs behind these actions.

- Hitler purged the country primarily from Jews (+/- 6mill) whilst Stalin wiped out Ukrainians, Poles, Koreans, Volga Germans, Crimean Tatars, Kalmyks, Chechens, Ingush, Balkars, Finns, Bulgarians and the list continues. Hitler's aim was to create a perfect race, the Aryan race. Stalin merely wiped out everyone who wasn't 'Russian'.

- Hitler consolidated power democratically, and did not conceal his aims prior to this consolidation.
- Stalin consolidated power through wiping out political opponents and playing the cards in the right manner.

Hitler was a visionary, with ideals, goals, and aims to be achieved. He did not subject his country’s people to simple manual labour. Hitler focussed on creating more leaders, rather than more followers. An example of this were the Adolf-Hitler Schule. Stalin may have ‘improved’ the living conditions of his people, but being able to continue your existence is not what I call a good life. Being subjected to a regime as a mindless meaningless puppet to work and contribute to the industrial production to benefit the nation’s elite classes.

At least, to some extent, we can argue that Hitler acted in the interest of the Germans and fellow-Aryans across Europe (as even foreign Aryans were admitted to the Hitler Youth, thus acknowledging them as worthy humans and citizens). Stalin might have given the Russians collective farming and some industry, but if we see the conditions in which this took place and how it was enforced, I would not only call it disgraceful, but also classify Stalin as the worst of the two dictators.

Hitler pursued his ideology, Stalin abused his ideology to consolidate power, and power alone.

If you say 'dictator' to someone in the street, they will immediately think of Hitler. Not Stalin.

Plus Hitler's 'tache FTW.

I would say Hitler .... There are so many reasons as to why i picked him....

-Extreme level of nationalism
-Use of child to affect the future generations in the search of the perfect German

I would have to say hitler, This is because like most things german he was much more efficient than the American trained Iraqi dictator. Gas will always be more efficient in closed spaces than out in the open. he also made influencial allies such as Mousilini and Stalin in the early years, where as Sadam who was heavily influenced by the American arogance decided to go it alone and lost even when confronted by someone as stupid as George Bush. Hitler used more modern methods even though he was a dictator almost 60 years before Sadams rose to prominance, for instance hitler used his afluence to gain influence as well as fear where as sadam used fear alone to influence the people. Oh and hitler shot himself he never would of let any yank hang him

Hitler was way more agressive and though he lose the war if you watch the soldiers/casualities numbers you will see that german soldiers really kicked ass. Plus, he ruled helped by people's faith instead by terror at its own.

Disregarding pure numbers, since Stalin had more material to work with, I am inclined to post Hitler. Not only was his feverish grip on popular will unrivalled, he performed completely audacious acts, even above those committed by Stalin. How many dictators had the cajones to take their government hostage with a machine gun before taking power? And as far as I know, Stalin never really had the uncanny, diabolic luck granted to Hitler. These qualities along with the more... obvious ones, lead me to vote for Hitler as Dictator.

Hitler is by far the best for the following reasons

1 he was nice to Dogs he had his own dog called blondi that he unselfishly killed so the enemy couldnt adopt her and make eat anything other than pedigree chum
2 he was nice to kids i seen a photo
3 he wanted his country to be perfect and get rid of people holding back his great nations economy
4 he had a silly moostosh just to make people laugh

i believe he was misrepresented by the media and bad PR work made him look like a silly arse but ive seen pictures of him recently that make him look like an all round good egg

Oh and me and Gordy thik he rocks and if you dont agree you better hope he doesnt come back into power cos we all know hes not deed

In addition to my good friend 88's comments. Hitler was quite frankly a superb guy. Loved dogs, women and his country. He was a true patron to germany and I believe they should celebrate a Saint Adolf's day in Germany, (After all he did it all for the country).

He is a f**king legend. I'm not saying Stalin wasn't a good guy but Adolf rocks, I challenge anyone to argue.

Stalin, overall was the greater and more powerful dictator, he seized power in a very dictatorish way by destroying his oppositing that was Trotsky, he killed millions of his own people to secure his place in power, he was communist (come on!) and led russia into it's industrial revolution.

Where as, Hitler tried and failed to kill off a race, had one testicle, promoted aryans even though he himself was completely non-aryan, gained power in the usual boring way, and then commited suicide when things got a bit tough.

-Hitler ALMOST won WWII. Stalin DID win WWII. Not only that, he dragged Russia from a poor, agrarian economy to be one of the only two superpowers in the world. Hitler took a crumbling Weimar Germany, made it decent for a while, and theny brought doom back to it...

This is a no-brainer. They were both equally brutal, but Hitler was a moron, besides being completely bat-sh*t crazy. Let's not forget that he LOST. Stalin, on the other hand, died of old age after forging a country of peasants and ineffectual revolutionaries into one of the most powerful nations that ever was.

The article written by Capitalistocrat in fact seems to confirm that Stalin, in fact, was the better dictator.

Capitalistocrat's first argument is that Stalin executed more people than Hitler. Firstly this statistically inaccurate: Stalin did not 'execute' in excess of 6 million opponents. Capitalistocrat may be getting confused with people that died as a consequence of irresponsible economic policy. Secondly Capitalistocrat has shown that even if this was the case, Stalin was in power for longer; 13 years more to be precise.

Capitalistocrat's second argument, that 'Hitler purged the country primarily from Jews (+/- 6mill)' need no rebuttal as it speaks for itself as to why Hitler is the worst dictator. There was no such systematic campaign by Stalin to eliminate a whole race of people.

Capitalistocrat's third argument, that 'Hitler was a visionary, with ideals, goals, and aims to be achieved' just does not seem to wash. Whilst this may be true, has Capitalistocrat not considered what they were? His vision was fascist, his ideals included a racial world with 'inferior' races enslaved. His goals and aims included massacaring the 'slav' race until the succumb to slavery. Whilst Stalin was mean, he was not this racist, facist and terrific; at least his ideals and goals were inclusive, and based around lifting everyone out of peasantry.

Thankyou Capitalistocrat for blowing the trumpet of Stalin instead of Hitler, Stalin was the better dictator of the two. Why was it he managed to stay in power many years longer and died naturally?

Um...this is disturbing on so many levels. Defintely Stalin - brought the russians from a deep argrarian society to the pinnacle of world power in a contest with the states; empire lasted well beyond the 9 years of the third reich; killed about 5x more people than hitler did in the holocaust; legacy & fear of reprisal lasted 10 years beyond his death.

Defintely a sicker SOB than hitler, and that is something...

One thing is a definite, they were both masters of propaganda. Stalin was responsible for turning the Soviet Union into a superpower. Hitler was unsuccessful in his attempts in the end.

How can you say Hitler is the 'best' dictator when comparing him with Stalin, when you consider the state at which their countries were left in at the time of their death.

Germany - destroyed during a war, left in ruins.

USSR - arguably the most powerful nation on the planet, if not the second most powerful.

The title is inappropriate unless you are asking who was best at being a dictator. Stalin, without a question.
He made the entire world forget the truth. I meet very few people who know what a Gulag is. He ran them as a labor camp. He arrested whoever he wanted, called them enemy of the state. This could just mean something as simple as late for work three times, or you were a chemist. He opened up Katorga's which is where they sent truly dangerous criminals so that they could mine uranium. He exiled millions. Its estimated that more than 12 million people died in the Gulags, thats not counting those who died on their way to Gulags. He managed to open up thousands of Gulags and keep the world blind to it. Most people don't even know that it was only around a decade ago that Gulags were still up and running. And even know the prison systems in russia are still run similarly.
Hitlers evils are more well known, but Russia attended Nuremburg knowing that they were guilty of the same crimes. The vice president visited a Gulag and didn't even know he was looking at prisoners the lies were so well conceived.
He came closer to genocide in many countries than Hitler did. Ukraine, Crimea, anyone he didn't like. Imprisoned, exiled, not allowed to cross the border, occupied. You couldn't even tell anti-communist jokes.

Stalin killed many more people than what Hitler killed. In the 1930's he eliminated all political enemies by purging the Communist Party. no one was safe. Trotsky, Kamenev, Zinoviev and Bukharin were all exiled or shot or sent to labour camps then shot. Hitler never went as far as to remove all NAZI's likely to remove him from power. Stalin also lasted longer. Hitler, 12 years. Stalin nearly 25 years

Stalin was better because of the future he made for his country. At this point in time witch country has the most anomasity remaning against it from WW2. Germany. More peope still hate germany for there involvment. Because of the way that stalin removed the USSR from the conflict manny people forget about there actions.
