HELLO!

The bells are total terrorism!

There are three different bells near by apartment; one is playing every 15 minutes, one every half hour and there is a full GOING-BOING every hour... something like this (case: three o’clock at night):

GOING, GOING, GOING, GOING.... (Four times means a full hour)

DING-DONG, DING-DONG, DING-DONG.... (three times wirh echos)

BOING...BOING...BOING (slow three boings)

At four o’clock even worse... In the summers sleeping with open windows can be a nightmare.

I did not know about this and now it is a little late for to escape quickly... but I will do it! The bells are pure idiotism during the nights. I have zero understanding for this tradition... (= people are living in a dark midde ages)

Yours,
Brokenbell

In Switzerland, church bells ring every 15minutes to tell you the passing of the time - DAY AND NIGHT!

This is too much.

There is even a Simpson's Episode ("A little Prayer"), where Marge Simpson, standing close to a church, shouts something alike: "This bell ringing can't be endured!"
And Bart and Lisa covering their ears...

In Switzerland there are even organisations that fight the church-bell noise, one of which is called IG Stiller.

In the book "Xenophobe's guide to the Swiss"
by Paul Bilton it says:

"...The church holds greater sway in Switzerland than in many modern societies.

This is witnessed by bell-ringing which the tourists find so charming but which many prematurely deaf Swiss living within earshot find rather less appealing.

Bells start clanging at all times of the day and night - to tell the farmers it is time for lunch, to tell the farmers it is time to work again; on Saturdays to remind the faithful that tomorrow is Sunday and on Sundays to tell them 'today's the day'..."

You really think so? Do you actually believe that this will solve the problem?!

LOTS of people in Switzerland hate the churchbell noise, see for example on this blog here:
www.kirchenglocken.ch

Thanks.

Global warming affects the entire planet. What does a cottage have to do with bells?

I'm going with nice, because I'm not sure what kind of bell sounds are you talking about.

All my encounters with church bells are very nice melodic sounds.

However if you mean those "RING A LING RANG A LANG SANCTUARYYY!" bells, oh wow, noise.

People are pretty adaptable--I've lived in a place with 15-minute chimes, and found it very pleasant once I got used to it. It helps you keep track of time, and only lasts for a couple of seconds.

More than that, the more specific chimes that indicate that it is time for services are a lovely reminder of a traditional anchor in an increasingly isolating and skeptical society.

I love church bells. It's just that cyclical, "on time" (for lack of a better description), sort of sound that I like hearing during the weekday and on weekends. I give it a thumbs up.

it's nice if you live in a cottage in the country side unaffected by gobal warming or other man-made pollution
