PORTABILITY, nowadays this is more important than ever as people are always on the move. Also, in an age where electricity is running out, always being tethered to the wall sapping electricity constantly probably isn't the best.

Durability and Affordability

Laptop portability is nice but that increases its risk that it gets damaged all the time.

This also means it gets replaced less often, which in the long run means you save a little.

Really depends on what people use it for.

I imagine for a lot of people ease of use, price and portability would be the biggest things to consider.

However particularly for gamers, video/photo editing, etc. a PC is by far superior.

Using a laptop for gaming instead of a PC is like using dial-up internet instead of Wi-Fi. There are practically no advantages and it is very unreliable.
PCs offer the power and upgradability needed for a gaming rig.
The upgradability is an advantage in itself. Instead of buying a whole new system every few years, you can upgrade individual parts when needed.
I don't know much about video/photo editing, but I know it can be RAM intensive-an area PCs are better.

You may think I have focused on a small segment of the population and while that is true, it is a very large part of the computer industry.
There are over 125 million people using steam (the biggest distribution channel for PC games), so it is a notable customer base. (http://kotaku.com/there-are-over-125-million-steam-accounts-1687820875)
