so what your trying to say is

"They can sell albums better" = coldplay has better marketing techniques so their music is better

"your Grandma knows the chorus to 'Clocks'" = popular bands make better music

"Thom Yorke sneers and mumbles about the world today,
and is often just incomprehensible. " = for music to be good, lyrics must be easily understood

"Radiohead see themselves as an uplifting band, but many disagree, they're just as depressing as they sound most of the time. " = depressing music is bad music

"Coldplay are relatively more appealing to the eye" = you have to look good to make good music

none of these are good arguments as to why Coldplay would be better than Radiohead

i like both Coldpay and Radiohead very much but Radiohead has the creative edge that i tend to lean toward

Just recently I purchased both Radiohead and Coldplay concert tickets because I do like both bands. However, since "Viva La Vida" has been released I am now looking to sell my Coldplay tickets because I could use the money for gas. Album's like "The Bends", "OK Computer", and "Kid A" are three of the best albums over the last 20 years, and that goes for any genre of music. I find Coldplay to be "safe" and commercialized (which isn't a terrible thing) while Radiohead is always pushing the envelope and much more creative in their song writing. Just because Coldplay gets more radio play doesn't make them the better band.

Radiohead gets my vote and it's not even close.

"That's what bands are around for. To make money." I know that was posted in February, but it is Now Oct. 11. Radiohead has just released their latest album "In Rainbows" which is available for download at any price you feel it's worth. Radiohead's new method of delivering their music dismisses your theory of what Radiohead is about. 3 radiohead. They truly are the most important band, pushing music even further.

Radiohead is suprerior as far as musician ship goes. Coldplay doesn't have anyone who can compare to Johnny Greenwood on the guitar and Christ Martin tries to sound like Thom Yorke singing. Coldplay make albums that are big and arena-rock style and always radio-friendly. Radiohead makes what they want when they want. Not to mention there are several songs from Coldplay which have almost identical drum parts which shows how unoriginal they are.

THIS CAME STRAIGHT OF WIKIPEDIA! LOOK UP HIS NAME ON THERE IF YOU WANT PROOF. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chris_Martin Martin's primary influence is the British band Radiohead. In a 2008 Rolling Stone interview Martin stated: "Sometimes I feel like they [Radiohead] cleared a path with a machete, and we came afterward and put up a strip mall. I would still give my left [testicle] to write anything as good as OK Computer."

He clearly stated that he has never written anything as good as OK Computer

Radiohead creates a deeper and richer mood than does Coldplay; however, I do like both bands. Musically and lyrically Radiohead is more comprehensive in terms of describing human experience. For example, the introspection in Radiohead's "Videotape". "This has been the most perfect day I have ever seen". With lyrics such as these combined with music that seems to evoke strong emotion in the listener, Radiohead's listening experience is more intense. Also, from what I understand Coldplay was influenced by Radiohead.

I listend to the album Viva la Vida recently and found it good. I would say it is very good. On the other hand, I've found most of the albums performed by Radiohead great. The difference between good and great is based on the fact that I find a new thrill, or new perspective or something, almost each time I listen to OKC, KA, etc, under different circumstances, while unfortunatelky I get increasingly bored repeating Coldplay's. Of course this is just my personal opinion and I' m sorry for my insufficient English, I'm a Japanese newbie.

A band with more popularity but less talent than another band with less popularity but tons more talent doesn't make the more popular band superior. Look at movies for example. Many of the higher grossing movies coming out now aren't that good at all but they are popular. It doesn't make it a better over anything else simply because it's more popular and makes more money.

So You believe that music deep in emotion is depressing, wist-slitting rubbish? You probably do not actually own the album and if you did you would know that the music itself is (mostly) bright and alive and the lyrics are dark and used things called 'similies' and 'metaphors'. Thom is right about Oasis: "It's a bunch of middle class people applauding a bunch of guys who act stupid and write really primitive music, then they say 'it's so honest'".

Street Spirit ( Fade Out) could be the only argument. But it is the inventiveness of a group with Kid A, the grace of the melodies of one OK Computer or hymns as Creep who make of Radiohead an exceptional band. Coldplay again has to prove that he can evolve... Their last album lets glimpse it. Coldplay is a very good band, but there is a certain magic in the band to Thom Yorke who personally touches my soul. Thus Radiohead is better for me.

So therefore Britney Spears is one of the greatest performers of all time? Both bands have sold a large number of albums and are equally "popular" (whatever that means). Being better isn't about sales at all: it's about writing music that connects to people in a deep way. It's difficult to poll every person that has bought each of these band's music, but I think Radiohead has had much more influence through their music than Coldplay could ever imagine.

Cause N Sync is waaaaay better than Velvet Undergorund?

I think it comes down to what you look for in music and what the band looks to create.
With Coldplay, we have a commercially viable sound aimed to sell and is readily available to the average listener.
If that's what you're looking for, great.
I feel that Radiohead creates to express. If you look for some sort of relationship with a band, Radiohead is the better option because of the heart and passion they put into a record. I'm not saying Coldplay doesn't care what sort of product they put out but Thom's lyrics indicate a certain vulnerability that Chris doesn't seem to reach. I think this is why people who connect with Radiohead do so in such a strong way.
At the end of the day, Radiohead evokes a much stronger bind emotionally and for many, that's what music is about.

For starters I like both bands. But, there has been no sound arguments in favour of Coldplay. "they are more popular" well Justin Bieber is hugely popular but I wouldn't say he outclasses muse for example.
Secondly Coldplays sound is a pale imitation of radioheads, without radiohead there would be no Coldplay.
Thirdly Radiohead are considered one of the most groundbreaking and creative bands of all time. Music does not exist to make money as someone ridiculously claimed. Music, like all art aims to make sense of the world and provide meaning by constantly innovating to suit the present context. Pablo honey...punk album that fit the grungey 90's followed by a britpop "the bends". Then at the coming of the internet and the PC "Ok computer" get released. Clearly radiohead are shifting to fit the times. Coldplay have used the same boring sound every album. radiohead have done punk, pop, dance, electro and hard rock and jazz...I fail to see any logic as to why Coldplay are "better"

Radiohead is the "better" band. They have consistently had their included in top ten albums of all times. They are more consistently a favorite among musicians while Coldplay is a favorite among non-musicians. They have had their songs covered by prominent jazz artists very frequently (Geoff Keezer, Brad Mehldau - won't find them covering Coldplay because Coldplay's music is far too simple to make an interesting Jazz piece). Their guitarist is the composer-in-residence of the BBC orchestra.

What Coldplay does well: Playing 4 chords over and over hitting the special harmonic changes that have been done since Bach (See any Bach cantata) and making a hit out of it.

What Radiohead does well: Writing complex musical textures using polyrhythms, sophisticated harmonic structures, and abstract melodic lines.

I was once stuck driving a car for several hours with only a Coldplay album. There was one good song, and the rest was filler music that was virtually unlistenable. Buy OK Computer: Collector's Edition and try to find a bad song on it.

Sure, Coldplay are better looking, sell more records, blah blah blah. What you need to remember is that Radiohead never wanted to be those things. Coldplay obviously did. Radiohead just wanted to make records that people like, and frankly they are just f**king awesome records. With the exception of Pablo Honey, I don't think there has been an album by Radiohead that hasn't blown me away in some way. The musical risks they take with every song are astonishing, and yet, they still have a very large fanbase. Radiohead never really wanted to be popular, and Coldplay did. Coldplay sells more records because they are more accessible, but one listen to OK Computer or In Rainbows, and you will see why Radiohead is the better band.

The thing with Radiohead is that they've never ever been credited as the best band in the world. Whilst a minority will say the 90s belonged to Thom Yorke's band, the majority, and more crucially, history itself will say that this decade belonged most certainly to Oasis. All I can say is who has been more successful i the 2000s? Coldplay or Radiohead? Coldplay have sold 34 million albums in the space of just 8 years. Radiohead have sold 20 million in 16 years. Radiohead do not have those instantly recognizable and memorable tunes, like Clocks or Viva La Vida. You knew where you were when you heard these songs first whether it was the thumping beating strings of Viva or the stunning and probably one of the most famous piano rifts in music history.

Radiohead is good, yes, but Coldplay is much more of an accessible band. I grew up being a big fan of Radiohead but the moment I saw Coldplay live I was blown away. Not only do they put on an amazing, interactive show, the overall experience of seeing them live is an uplifting experience.
I must agree that they excel in making great singles, but beyond those singles every other track in their albums are great tunes.
You really can't match Chris Martin's amazing vocal range and emotional lyrical abilities. Sure Thom Yorke can hit the same pitches and they may sound a little bit alike, but really, which band actually makes you feel good and happy? Coldplay. I love Radiohead for their musical abilities, but you must admit they are an incredibly introverted band. I've seen them live, they really don't interact or appreciate the audience the way that Coldplay does. And yes, indeed, Radiohead's music is much darker and depressing.

Overall, I love each band both equally, but after seeing Radiohead and Coldplay live, Coldplay has to be the best.

Their songs - "Yellow", "Trouble","Shiver", "Clocks", "Speed of Sound", "Talk", "Viva la Vida", "Violet Hill", "Lost" and "Lovers in Japan" are among my favorites. As per Radiohead are concerned, they are extremely dull. I have listened "Paranoid Android", "No Surprises" and "Karma Police" but they didn't sound good at all. The moment I play them, that very minute I want to delete the songs of Radiohead. So, Coldplay is far better than Radiohead.

My vote goes to Coldplay on this one. I love Radiohead as well. I own both of these bands' entire catalogs (EP's, Studio Albums, Compilations, Live Albums, Singles, etc.) but Coldplay have a lot more energy and "oomph". Power, you know? Balls! Sure, I love "Kid A", but songs like "Motion Picture Soundtrack" and "Idioteque" are just far too mellow. Then you have Coldplay songs like "Violet Hill" and "God Put A Smile Upon Your Face" that are just out there! I've seen both in concert too, and both were equally as impressive, but again, Coldplay has my vote here.
