How about MAD? The argument has traditionally been that when everyone CAN do it no one WILL do it.

I'm not really sure if I buy that, but still, I think it's worth addressing.

Syria signed the Non-Proliferation Treaty in1969. Therefore it is entitled to all of the rights and obligations under that treaty. If we are to selectively pick who is entitled to such rights, we run the risk of having countries either not sign it or leave the treaty. That increases proliferation risks exponentially making the world significently more dangerous. While allowing Syria to exercise its rights under the NPT may not be politically wise, the risk of neutering the NPT is far more risky.

Furthermore, as long as Syria abides to its obligations under the NPT of inspections and declarations, there is little to fear. If it however does not abide, then we have issues. Furthermore, Syria should not be allowed to enrich its own fuel.

Yeah you're right. Why not have every nation in that hostile environment have the capability to kill tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands with the push of a button?

I think the potential risk for playing that little experiment out is too high for us to be wrong.
