Yeah greatest country EVER. I've heard the US called this time and again by several people. While it first struck me as ridiculous, after thinking about it, it seems less so. I still think it is not the case, but I was wondering if anyone here does.

Having spent the last two years in Vietnam, let me tell you something about the local women there... If you happen to fall in love with one and you tell her that you want to spend the rest of your life in Asia, she'll leave you (it happened to me!)

There are women here who will pay the equivalent of ten years' pay in Vietnam for a man to marry her with the sole intention of moving to America. After the girl thinks the Department of Immigration isn't looking, she leaves the guy. Because of that, the U.S. Embassy in Hanoi has a NINE MONTH waiting period for couples (U.S. man and Vietnamese woman) who marry in Vietnam and intend to live in the United States. I know of several women here who are pregnant in such a situation (and you know they were pregnant BEFORE their marriage!)

Definitely not the greatest but greatest as in "Major Power"

I believe that at one point America was exactly that -the greatest nation in many peoples eyes -....these days Im not so sure.

There used to be a time where being an American was such a great accomplishment...for immigrants who came here and for those living here. People would only dream of coming to America and living the dream...but things have changed.

I think America is trying to hold on to that idea - at any cost.

How many foreigners marry French people so they can become French? The women I am talking about want to go to America so they can become Americans. Many don't even care about the man they're marrying. So I don't really see your point.

Uh... Well it doesn't have the highest GDP.... I mean, I like other countries more and all, but America's pretty cool... I'm just gonna say yes because its always fun bragging about America in front of people who aren't lucky to be from the greatest nation on Earth/in the universe/ever....

the first of the one world countries to become king, maybe we are on the verge of losing that title

but the US has defined and ruled the modern new age for the past 70 years or so
with scientific discovery, engineering creations, popular culture
new sports like skateboarding and surfing
new musical genres.......to many to list

the rest of the world has followed in our footsteps
America has a lot to be proud of, to bad the government makes the rest of the world want to through sh*t and stones at the US, because all against one, well, eventually they will and are about to knock us off the top of the mountain

While we might like to think we are the greatest, it isn't quite that way anymore. The USA has been on a steady decline for many years. We still are a great country just not the greatest. Look at Economy, Education, Health and Welfare, Housing, Employment, Military, Politics, News of the day and National Crime (just to list a few). Based on just those topics alone there really are "the good old years", in our not to distant past. The States are not so bad right now that a massive move is suggested, it is just that we have had much better times which classified us as greatest. Would I care to move away? No, this is my country good and/or bad. My opinion is that it will not get better for my children, grandchildren or great grand children, but I am not rich enough to buy them a new island to develop.

There's an 18-36-month wait for a "reunion of family" visa to enter France. Like, if a French citizen or resident marries abroad? 18-36 months before the spouse can join them.

So if we're going on anecdotal evidence of red tape, France is 2-4 times greater than the U.S.

I'm honestly not sure were I stand on this one. The US has its flaws and there have been great nations in the past. I'm intrested in hearing people's opinions.

well since it didn't give any specifics I think its counting all its assets and bad qualities into one. Which in turn should be done for other countries and then we compare

I believe if this was asked back in the 1990s or just after the fall of the soviet union that many more would call this country the greatest on earth.however at this time it is not. the US is in a decline and whether we pull ourselves out of it has yet to be seen. also letme just say that altho the US isnt perfect by anymeans i do believe this country has done more than any other in helping not only its own citizens but those of other countries as well.
