The Australian situation reminds me of Puerto Rico, for the most part its citizenry is afraid of emancipation-letting go of the colonial hand that has held them for so long....

Britain does not have a say at all in how Australia is run. America does have a say in how Puerto Rico is run. Big difference.

Nothing to do with old colonies. Australia is free, so why should it want to become a Republic?

Why a Republic? What is so perfect about a Republic? Judging Australia by Americas standards is wrong. The US makes this mistake all over the world.

Australia should be whatever it wants to be, Republic or a Constitutional Monarchy.

Seeing as a Republic will offer nothing more than they have then they don't feel the need to switch. After all, Britain has no say in how Australia is run. The Queen is a head of state, her Monarchy is a figure head. Nothing to do with Britain except the Queen is British.
