I'm not sure what I think at the moment so I'm hoping some debate would make my mind up on this subject?!

While it is correct, a parent should be the one to punish their child, there is history in corporal punishment. When it was applied in schools before this generation, children behaved. We turned out kids that had manners, were not disrespectful, and did their school work.
Now NOT ALL (please notice the large print) kids today are misbehaving, creating chaos, disrespectful, with no manners, etc., but there is infinitely MORE % wise that do fit that description. Now there are alternative schools for problem kids. They didn't exist in the past.
The only one allowed to dispense corporal punishment when I worked in the public schools (70's and 80's) was the principal. AND that was AFTER the parent was notified and invited to the school. Honestly, most parents said deal with my child in school and I will deal with the child when he gets home. So, two punishments applied, giving a little incentive for the student to remember.
Now we have guns, rudeness, profanity and threats in the school and school massacres.
So maybe a little well placed corporal punishment in concert with parental punishment might not be so bad.

Ask the baby boomers if the corporal punishment in their schools hurt them, when they were growing up.

School Choice would be better.

One-size-fits-all government "solutions" are beginning to look like a bad joke. Let's pay attention to when this begins to generate more controversy than it's worth. Government is often portrayed as citizens "working together", but forcing everyone into the same "together" at some point works to tear us apart.

Corporal Punishment. Prayer. Moment of Silence. Sex Education. Creationism vs Evolution. Dress codes. Uniforms. Segregation of the sexes. Busing. Teacher salaries. Strikes. Special needs. Maybe School Choice WOULD be better.
