Google Ready to Unleash the GPhone
Lookout iPhone. Google is jumping in. As we know they are trying to become a carrier right now, if the FCC lets them have their way.

Reports also suggest the GPhone will be a free subscription based cellphone plan, where revenue would be ge...

ug, the iphone is crap.
my buddy bought one, 700 bucks for a phone. any way the internet "browser" is junk,, slow as hell. he put 50 songs into the phone, but made the mistake of not imbeding the album cover art into the tracks, then he chose to get the album covers online,, oh boy,, it connected to the net, and took 54 minutes to download and imbed the art,, it stayed connected the whole time,, at peak minutes. it did this without letting him know, and while he was able to use the phone for other tasks, such as talking, making him unaware.
apple also used the genius marketing technique of screwing its customers. the iphone like the ipod, has a battery that cannot be accesed,, if the battery goes bad,, guess what? yeah you got it.
the screen(which covers about 90% of the phone) is made out of glass. hmmn.
oh,, the browser? doesnt have flash support,, oh well guess most people dont need to see about 80% of the web any way.

I haven't even bothered getting my iphone out the box yet because of the por reports the other people who got one at the same time as me have given.

I still like my Blackjack and since that took me so long to get a full understanding of I am not going to move until something really special comes along.

I was actually discussing this in another debate about advertising. The reason Google are so perfect for the mobile phone market right now is their advertiinsg routes.

Inside of ad agencies there is a holy grail which has four criterea:

1. Opt-in (the customer ASKS for the advertising)

2. Easy to use (the advertising doesn't interfere with functions
of devices and so on)

3. Relevant (they like coke they get coke ads they don't like
coke they get pepsi ads)

4. A clear benefit to the customer (this already exists, you get
tv practically for free because it transmits ads. But already
certain mobile phone operators are offering free minutes (money)
to customers who watch ads).

A mobile phone is a very personal item unlike Tv. So the advertising shown on the phone has a much deeper impact and resonnance with the consumer. However, the problem therein is whether comsumer will react adversely to having adverts play on something so personal to them.

If you follow the four rules of the advertising holy grail then this is no longer a problem. A user can ask for advertising that suits their needs. If they want a pair of sneakers the3n the user walkthrough is very simple.

1. change mobile profile to include interest in sneakers.

2. nike sends an advert to the phone.

3. after the 10 second advert plays the user has a choice of functions

(a) search for nearby stores
(b) order via your handset
(c) search for promotions

etc etc

The beuaty of mobile advertising is that a mobile phone allows for video playback and has interactive features. So a user can respond and give immediate feedback to the ad client and it's represented brand.

So basically a Gphone will most likely offer subsidized calls and handsets in return for watching advertising that you have shown interest in.

The concept has been around for a long long time so I expect Google to have very quick success with the concept. They aren't exactly breaking new ground either. Some phone companies in Europe and Asai where the mobile industry is 3 or 4 years advanced of the US already offer similar schemes.

Sorry about the number and length of my posts by the way. I wrote a business plan a few years ago on the subject of mobile advertising and actually had a few meetings with Google at the time on the subject... maybe I should sue hehehe.

i'm not sure about the features of the Gphone yet, but all i have to say is that the touch screen on the iphone could be way better. instead of putting a glass touch-sensitive screen, they should have put an lcd touch screen (like the navigators). that way, it feels like your actually touching something, instead of moving your fingers across glass and having random buttons be pushed. and it also doesnt crack/scratch/get fingerprints. and its lighter, and just feels better to touch. also the touch glass screen can lose sensitivity but the lcd screens, if they do you can always push a little harder .. the glass ones u cant.

I believe Apple has had more products tied to the word 'crap' than Google ever has.

Google has the best programmers the world has to offer working in the Googleplex and they flex that collective muscle in everything they do. I expect that the same level of excellence will be carried on to the Gphone and I highly anticipate its launch over that of a certain over-rated phone.

The touch screen on the iPhone is much cooler than any cheap crap that Google will come out with.

Everyone loves that touch screen....moving stuff around with your fingers is da bomb!

It's hard for me to vote for a phone that doesn't yet exist. The GPhone may end up being a bigger disappointment than the iPhone. Better the devil you know than the devil you don't.

I don't mind. I like that it brought a few old faces back onto the site.

On a seperate note, there has been mention of "tag team" debates. I don't know about the time or resources it might require but if there is a cheap n easy way to set up a beta version I think a few of us would readily jump in and work out the bugs for you.

Sorry, this is just funny to me. How is it people are voting and arguing for the Gphone when they're not out yet, no one's seen one and we have no idea what they'll do or behave like? It's like people who wanted an iPhone before they existed. I'd love to have some of you people invest in some Gproperty I have for sale. It used to be a nuclear testing site, but hey, it's "G" property by Google.

Where to begin... (1) A browser isn't slow, that's AT&T's Edge network and it performs like every other phone they offer except the 3G PDA's which some cost more than the iPhone. (2) The iPhone doesn't download the cover art, that's iTunes and if it took him that long then his internet connection is slow as hell. Again, not the phone. There's no option or command on the phone to initiate this - it's done on the computer and later synced. You also can't use the phone (like many others) while the Edge traffic is active. (3) Yes, you're right about the battery not being replaceable - that bites, but I've had mine for a long time and no battery issues. So we'll see.

(4) No, the browser doesn't support Flash and guess what? You don't use Flash on your phone or any other either. The Flash plug-in on other phones costs $$ - only some "rare" phones come with it pre-installed. So what is it you think you're missing out on? And lack of Flash support doesn't keep you from 80% of the web, but nice try.

Spoken like someone who's never programmed a day in his/her life. You base these statements on what? Their stock price? Yes, people at Google are talented, but have you seen Apple's record lately? They don't pay people to be cool - the developers at Apple are incredibly gifted as well. I've worked with people from both companies and most of them could care less about the company they work for - they just want to do cool sh*t, which they all get to do in their own right.

I guess you've used the iPhone a lot and found it overrated? I on the other hand, and hundreds of thousands of others have found it to be the opposite. Hands down my favorite phone I've owned.
