The best offense is a good defense

champions of the last few decades in football have come with great defensive minds. the one notable exception was the Colts who won this year. but I would argue there are exceptions to every rule.

high-powered offenses need some defenses but defenses don't need offenses because defenses can score.

It's not which is better. It's being good at both and using each at it's proper time.

I think football fans will remember the bears making football history this year against the cardinals by making no offensive touchdowns. Not only that they came back from being behind like twenty points with five minutes to go and through sheer brute force came up with those points to win. It was a game that proved that Urlacher and the bears truly were bears. I'm not even a big football fan but that game was ferocious. Grossman couldn't complete a pass to save his life so they forced it from the defensive standpoint, fumbles, interceptions, ripping the ball away and made 30 some points defensively. They were the first team to score and win using only defensive touchdowns.

THE BEST STRATEGY

Remember that this is a team sport.
The best strategy is that EVERYONE is on board, giving 110% of their best, no matter what the position. It is also important that the Coaches, Managers and Owners are on board as well. The team is nothing without first having stellar Coach and coaching staff backed by the people with the money. When the proper players (well trained and of like mind) are there to play and do as instructed, adding their particular talent, you are then creating THE BEST STRATEGY. Enjoyed by all.

As the classic saying goes, the best team starts with a great defense. This is especially true. For instance, the bears of 2006 were built on a strong defense with a fairly inconsistent offense. Yes, they did not win the super bowl but they made it there on the shoulders of their defense. Also, did anyone notice that the defense had a fairly rough game considering they were on the field for so long. Look through the past. The bears 1985-86 superbowl win was a team that was built off their 46 defense with an offense that could score. I mean don't get me wrong, a team needs an offense that can score but they especially need a defense to stop the other team from scoring.

Another example of a one sided debate.

You need touchdowns to win the game. If you score 10 touchdowns and the other team scores 9 you still win.

However if you score 0 touchdowns and stop the other team from scoring any you do not win.

So the offense is more important than the defense.

The Denver Broncos are a good example of this principle. For the last several years they have had a relatively strong defense, but, alas, a less than stellar offense.

Result: While they have done okay, without the offense to score more points (even if the defense does score some) and to eat up more of the clock, they have yet to succeed in accomplishing a fabulous season.

The Indianapolis Colts have had a strong offense and that has worked out quite well for themselves by comparison.
