I started this debate because I have just finnished Gormenghast and noticed a quote by C.S.Lewis (author of Lion, the witch and wardrobe) that read...

"peakes Books are actual additions to life, they give, like certain rare dreams, sensations we never had before, and enlarge our conception of the range of experience.

It is well recognized that TLTWAW is a re-telling of the biblical resurection story.

I thought about what C.S.Lewis is saying here about how Gormenghast actually represents something new and utterly original and how in comparrison to his own books he may be envious of Melvin Peakes ability to 'create' rather than 're-tell' a story.
