The US and therefore the world would be a much better place

Operation Eagle Claw failed due to adverse weather conditions in the desert causing damage to most of the helicopters attempting rescue of the US hostages held at the US Embassy in Iran, not due to poor planning or inadequacies by the military or the administration. Naturally Carter would've easily won re-election and Ray Gun would not have been elected. Since 1980, 20 of the 32 years have been republican presidencies and since 1968, 28 of the 44 years have been with a republican president.

First of all I disagree with your failure to use the word "haboob", which is a fantastic word which also describes the storm which hit the 'copters.

Second, while I agree that it may not have been a good thing long term to have had Reagan as president, 1) I dont know that Carter would have won re-election but for this accident (also, you argue that it was an accident and basically nobody's fault, but these storms are not uncommon in Iran and should have been planned for). Lots of factors influence an election and a causal connection is easily drawn between this event and the election outcome. 2) Its pretty big speculation to say just because Reagan wasnt elected when he was, an even bigger douchebag wouldn't be elected the next term or later making the country even worse.

Finally, I also wonder about your tying the US to the world. What is good for the US is not always good for the world as a whole.
