I believe that the wife and child does come into play as the debate doesn't A) Guarantee that you will save the person B) Doesn't say whether you will live in your attempt to save him.

Yes, I might save his life

The terms of the debate do not stipulate that I would be injured or killed in my effort to save the hypothetical person, so I can readily say I would attempt to save him. Otherwise, I would have to say I don't know. I've made enough brash projections about what I would or wouldn't do in a given situation to know that I'm not a good judge of such things. More often than not I've surprised myself by doing things I never dreamed I would or could do.

I don't see how the wife and kids thing comes into play. But as a reasonable person there is no reason not to attempt to save them.

It would depend on many things, being if I felt I could save them without endangering my life and how I felt at the time. All that in a split second to think. I think I'd be more likely to try saving the person though.

Yes, because if i had life insurance, then my wife would be able to get by for a little while

Well, first of all, how would you know whether or not the hit would be fatal? From the question, I am assuming that you are talking about some fantasy world, where people can predict how badly someone is going to be hurt. Besides, couldn't I save him in some other way than jumping in front of the car? Sure, I would shout MOVE, guy in (whatever he's wearing). Or, I could shove him out of the way, taking myself with him. whether or not I have a wife/husband and two kids is irrelevent, because I wouldn't have to sacrifice myself in order to save him.
