The Mexican government is also one of the most corrupt in the Western Hemisphere. The leaders there have done next to nothing of notice to combat the causes for massive emmigration of their citizens to the US and Canada, nor anything significant to combat the tremendous drug/gang problems that amazingly prevalent.

I'm not sure what you mean by "failed state". Are you implying that a temporary/emergency government should be put in place?

I am laughing so hard right now. Just because they don't have as much as we do? You gotta be kidding! That country is RAN BY DRUG DEALERS!!!! WAKE UP AND SMELL THE GUNFIRE! My friend simply tried to take a television to his mother and every single stop he had to pass a $50 bill to each of the police 'officers' that stopped the bus, otherwise the television would never have gotten to his mother.... Not as much as we have???? You are truly joking! Mexico is a true example of a liberal country and that is why it has failed and failed miserably!

This all goes back to "nation" being relative to your perception of the word.

Mexico is recognized as a country and is therefore a nation.

Now let us assume for a second that you don't mean literaly. Ok so they have failed because they do not have as much as we do. Is this not a very vain way to look at things?

There is nothing wrong with Mexico because they do not have a Burger King on every block.

Anybody else have any thoughts?

I concede your point but FYI, children stealing isn't limited to developing countries, not by a long shot.

I am wondering which country where there is no poverty, drug dealing or theft. If your criteria is based on these or government corruption then I look forward to seeing which country in the world is a success.

An international panel compiles a list ranging from least corrupt to most corrupt countries of the world. The index is called the CPI (Corruption Perception Index) and is used Travel Pod, Newsgallery, Nation Master, Forbes International, Transparency Org. and World Press. The list was created in 1995 by Transparency International and uses 13 different indicators to determine levels of corruption in each country in the world. Rather than listing their credentials, members and criteria used, I invite you to look them up and determine for yourself the validity of their methodology.
Based on the published index if 2009 there are 88 countries of the world which are listed as more corrupt than Mexico. Unless you have done your own studies, based on empirical data, your declaration of failed state would require some explanation.
As a point of reference, before you feel compelled to defend the United States, 16 other countries were ranked higher using the same index. At some point there has to be a cut off point at which a country is not considered a failed state. I would propose that we use the top 10 least corrupt countries, based on the index, as the model for which the rest of the world should govern themselves. Since it is unlikely that self governing people are prepared to sacrifice their way of life to adopt something foreign as a guideline by which to live, I would suggest that labeling other countries as failed states prior to getting your own house in order is a smug, self congratulatory and meaningless gesture.

You may or may not be familiar with the term Baksheesh. It is a commonly used word in the middle east and in some parts of south east Asia. Literally translated it means present. In common practice it means to pay for things you want. Some of the things include paying to get directions from anyone on the street. While I realize the following example is anecdotal, will relay it just the same. While in Cairo in 1989, I was unable to find my hotel after a day out in the city. The local traffic cop was willing to give me directions in exchange for his baksheesh. While I did it a bit strange at first, upon reflection I realized he was under no obligation to tell me anything. It was simply a business transaction. He had some information that I needed and just like any other commodity it was something for which I was willing to pay.
In any free market society there is an expectation to pay for information. I saw this as no different, in its purest form, than paying for a credit report on potential customers. Maybe you can explain the difference to me.

A major part of the problem, as stated by the other side, is the number of drug gangs in the country. Simply eliminating ridiculous drug laws would be the fastest and most efficient method of putting an end to this particular illegal activity.
I do not use heroin now. I am willing to bet however, that if I were so inclined, I could go out on the street and find somebody willing to sell me some. If all drugs were suddenly decriminalized I do not see myself suddenly sitting home and injecting them into my arm.
There were several studies in the late 70’s and early 80’s which commonly found that approximately 12% of the population of North America were addicted to something. (I apologize for not being able to site the source or reference) When compared to the Netherlands, one of the most liberal countries in the world for drug use, the results did not vary by more than a single percentage point.
I submit that the majority of the population merely abstains from drugs because they are illegal but simply that they choose not to use them. Therefore, taking the money being spent on this “war on drugs” would be of far greater use doing something of real benefit for the citizens.

Deeper into Mexico, past the border cities such as Tijuana, there are nicer cities that draw thousands, if not millions of tourists a year.
Mexico also has the thirteenth largest enconomy (ranked by World Bank) and is rapidly growing.
Even though Mexico has cities with high crime rates, every country does. In just America, look at Chicago, New Orleans, Philadelphia, and Miami.

Hey Processing: Remember the old saying about not arguing with drunks and idiots. larryt is obviously some silly kid trying to get a bit of attention he is obviously lacking in real life. If you quit responding to him he will rant and rave for a bit then go away. Simply pity him and hope he gets through puberty some day.
